20th Century British Literature

In this course, students explored the way that new technologies in the 20th century, such as the typewriter or the telegram, reshaped poetic and narrative forms. And in doing so, we explored the way these technologies related to the conception of our human subjectivity and other identities, such as race, sexuality, and gender. In conducting this exploration, I played with fiction and literary analysis forms to create pieces that utilized the forms of writing and subjectivity developed by 20th Century British authors for my own work.

When Arthur Dies

"When Arthur Dies" was a creative writing and literary analysis piece I wrote for 20th Century British Literature. It is a short story about a woman whose husband dies after an abrupt bout of illness--and who comes to discover she has queer, illicit feelings for the widow next door. It was a piece inspired by Virginia Woolf and Samuel Beckett's writing, and utilized technology developments as a way to signify rapid change in a similar fashion to these authors.
