Editing and Publishing

Editing and Publishing was a course meant to instruct and develop students’ abilities to wear many “editing” hats—and for the purpose of this instruction we developed pop-up publications to showcase our skills. Editors are meant to conduct mechanical and intellectual work—extensive editing and respecting the creative control of the author. Over the course of creating a pop-up publication, I wore these many hats. I copy-edited a wide selection of pieces sent into the publication. I developmentally edited these texts in such a way that was meant to preserve the author’s voice. I shaped a specific writing and editing practice for the publication, and developed my own writing for publication submissions as well.

As a part of this course I created a pop-up science fiction publication along with a team of other students, where I served as an editor and social media creator. Fully Automated was that very publication, and if you are interested in reading the pieces submitted to the publication, go here.

My own writing within this course was showcased on DUNF (The DU Creative Non Fiction Journal). You can read that writing here. "Attending to Our Boredoms" was a piece born from exactly that--pure and utter delight in experiencing boredom. It captured the way I felt bored as a child and bored as an adult, the way these sorts of feelings ebbed and flowed.
