Religion and Pop Culture
Religion and Pop Culture had students study the way religious practices, forms of “sacredness,” are often intertwined with the “profane,” that of the mass, popular culture. We did so by analyzing the way these religious traditions shape popular culture and vice versa, in film, music, and other such forms of popular culture. Throughout this course, I analyzed musicals, music, and other such cultural objects and the way that religious practices, specifically making what is dirty sacred again, manifested in these works.
Falsettos is my tried and true. When I have no more ideas, I turn to it for strength and resilience. As a musical, it is silly and tragic, hopeful and lovely. And I made it the subject of "Religion in Falsettos," what started as a small paper and turned into a large extravaganza. It was written my freshman year, and isn't my "best" but I am proud of it.
